Teruel is the small capital of the province of the same name in Aragón, in eastern Spain, about 900 metres above sea level. Its old town is famous for its Mudéjar architecture: the towers of the Cathedral of Santa María, San Pedro, San Martín and El Salvador are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site «Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon». It is also the city of the Lovers of Teruel, a medieval love story told all over Spain, and of Dinópolis, a dinosaur theme park. Teruel ham has its own protected designation of origin.
The climate is continental: cold winters, often below zero at night, and warm, dry summers. Teruel is on the railway line and the A-23 motorway between Valencia and Zaragoza; the nearest airport with passenger flights is Valencia. Life is quiet and much cheaper than in Madrid or Barcelona, and very few foreigners live here, so Spanish is what you hear everywhere. The Spanish immersion courses listed here take place in Olba, a village in a river valley about 60 km from the city.
