Spanish courses in Almería, on the Andalusian coast
Almería is a coastal city of about 200,000 inhabitants in eastern Andalusia, on the Mediterranean. Above the old town stands the Alcazaba, a fortress founded in the 10th century under the Caliphate of Córdoba and one of the largest Muslim fortresses in Spain, linked to the city walls that climb the hill of San Cristóbal. Around the cathedral, the town hall square and the Paseo de Almería, the centre is compact and easy to explore on foot.
Almería is one of the sunniest and driest places in Europe, with mild winters and long summers, and has city beaches within walking distance. Nearby are the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, with its volcanic coves, and the Tabernas Desert, where many Western films were shot. Almería Airport is about 9 km from the centre, and Granada can be reached in about two hours by road. A medium-sized city where life is lived in the street, it is a good place to practise Spanish every day.
