• Your donation to a social project in Peru Our free activities It’s very important to us that you not only have great success in your classes, but the possibility to get in touch with the rich culture and history of Peru and its people, as well as explore the fantastic landscapes of northern Peru. For this reason, we offer you many different activities to help you experience a complete cultural immersion. Cooking Classes The Peruvian cuisine is one of the finest and perhaps most undiscovered in Latin America. The richness of Peru's history and culture is one reason why its cuisine is so versatile and unique. Traditional recipes are influenced by the immigrants and conquerors this country has experienced in its ancient and more recent past, such as the Incas and Spanish conquistdores. Besides these well known groups the French and other European countries brought over some of their ingredients after Peru’s independence in 1821. Later they were followed by Chinese and Japanese immigrants. Peru’s coast offers an expecially really rich and diversified cuisine. We offer you twice a week traditional Peruvian and Latin American cooking lessons. If demand is high, we can offer additional classes in our school kitchen. After our cooking lessons you can enjoy the fruits of your labor with other sudents for a small contribution of about USD $1.50 for the entire meal. Salsa Classes Every week and during your stay at the Academia Superior de Idiomas in Peru you can take free Salsa dance classes. They are given by a professional salsa teacher on our school patio. It doesn’t matter if you are a complete beginner or an experienced dancer--our teacher will respond to your individual needs and help you master the steps. Weekly City Tour & Excursions Every week we organise a guided tour or excursion to popular and interesting places in Pimentel, Chiclayo or the surrounding areas. We regularly visit the “Mercado de Brujos” (the biggest shaman and witch market in South America), the handicraft market of Monsefu, the famous Brünning or “Tumbas Reales de Sipan“ museums, an ostrich farm in Pimentel, the Túcume Pyramids or the archaeological site and graves of the “Lord of Sipan.” Additional Conversation Classes Twice a week we offer additional conversation classes. Together with a teacher you will talk about current topics of Peru, politics, typical Latin American matters or just visit a nearby market. These additional conversation classes are a great possibility to improve your skills and get to know your schoolmates better. Tandem Program Our Tandem program is a great opportunity to explore the Peruvian culture and learn more about the Peruvian way of life while improving your Spanish skills after classes. We will pair you up with a native speaker who will help teach you Spanish. You can meet at the beach, in the city for a walk, make a stop in a cafe or explore a market. You can explore the city while practicing your Spanish with your Tandem partner. You will discover the culture of Peru first hand and will make new friends very easily. Peruvian movies Once a week you can join our movie screenings pf typical Spanish or Peruvian movies. Sometimes we show interesting documentaries about the country. After seeing the movie you will have a conversation class about the film to discuss themes and learn specific vocabulary. Orientation Seminar There might be a lot of things concerning culture and lifestyle that you will have to get acquainted with, especially if it’s your first visit to South America. Directly upon your arrival we will organise an extensive orientation seminar to equip you with everything you need to make your stay at ASI a comfortable one. The seminar will be held every week, so you can take if more than once, if you like. You will get to know your classmates, become familiar with the staff, and learn everything you will need to “survive” in Ecuador and during your stay in South America. We will not only give you an overview of the school, but we’ll share with you how to stay safe, travel smart and even use public transportation. You will gain important knowledge about the mentality of Peru and its residents, how to act in every important situation, what are common prices and any other relevant information. Participant Meetings At our school in Peru we organise regular student meetings to receive your feedback and help support you by answering your questions and helping to resolve your concerns. You can contact our staff every day of the week, and we maintain a 24 hour emergency number for more pressing issues. We have learned that these kinds of regular meetings are the best way to support our students with common problems and to help them to enjoy their stay in Peru.
