Italian courses in Lucca, Tuscany

Lucca is a small, elegant city in Tuscany, in central Italy, famous for its complete Renaissance walls: about 4 km of tree-lined ramparts that today are a park where locals walk, run and cycle every day. Inside the walls the historic centre is mostly pedestrian, with medieval towers, Romanesque churches such as San Michele and San Martino, and Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, an oval square built on the remains of a Roman amphitheatre. The Torre Guinigi, with oak trees growing on top, offers one of the best views of the city.

Studying Italian in Lucca means living in a real Tuscan town at a calm pace, where Italian is spoken everywhere and everything can be reached on foot or by bike. Lucca is the birthplace of the composer Giacomo Puccini, has a busy calendar of music and festivals (including Lucca Comics & Games in late October) and is surrounded by hills with vineyards, olive groves and old villas.

Getting there: the nearest airport is Pisa (about 30 minutes by car), and there are regular trains to Pisa and Florence. From Lucca you can easily visit Pisa, Florence, the Versilia coast and the mountains of the Garfagnana.
