These courses are designed to prepare you for the IELTS academic English exam, with focused training in exam strategies and techniques to allow you to maximise your potential and achieve the grade you need. The IELTS exam is a requirements for degree study at many English-speaking universities, including UCT. They are also used for immigration purposes and for professional accreditation. This course runs all year round and exams can be taken at regular intervals at a local test centre. Courses can be combined with General English afternoon electives. Please note that these courses are subject to availability, and you need to be at least Upper-Intermediate level to join the course.

ELC, in collaboration with Kurus English, are proud to offer a unique experiential learning programme, which we call Language Excursions. Kurus English has been offering this experience since 2008. The Language Excursions are out-of-classroom communication classes, where your teacher becomes your language guide. This promotes, encourages and links the practice of English through social, historical and cultural interactions. The Language Excursions are flexible and co-ordinate with actual events in Cape Town, whenever possible and/or desirable. These excursions give you the unique opportunity of improving your English while meeting and encountering the people, the energy and the diversity of Cape Town.

The English Language Centre student residence is located 5 minutes’ walk for the school in the bustling heart of Cape Town. Shared kitchen and common room areas, such as the social room with pool table, TV and couches, are also provided. Rooms are available in large or standard size, and large rooms include a fridge and television. The residence has free WiFi, laundry service and fingerprint ID security system. •All our UCT English Language Centre teachers have many years of experience and hold the highest English Language Teaching qualifications. Most importantly, they are dedicated, passionate, and work together as a team to share their knowledge and support each other and our students. Our newly refurbished English language premises are also equipped with the latest classroom technology, and offer a modern and stylish learning environment. Classes are kept small to maintain high quality, and a high student/teacher ratio. The UCT English Language Centre is located at the University’s Hiddingh Campus in the heart of the city. It is a short walk from Cape Town’s vibrant cultural and historic centre, and has easy access to the beaches and local attractions. You will be able to use all the facilities on Hiddingh campus, and to attend regular exhibitions, events and performances. A private UCT bus service will also connect you to the UCT main campus where you can access a wide range of sports and recreational facilities, join student clubs and societies, and attend student events. Your first day will include an orientation tour so you can get to know all the university has to offer. We know that learning a new language can be challenging, but we also think it should be a fun and rewarding experience and that it should take place in a relaxed, friendly and supportive environment!
